About this work
French Holiday, August 1969
A woman in sunglasses and a scarf in her hair sits behind the wheel of a gold-colored convertible with white leather seats. A man in a beige cardigan leans over the backrest and laughs at her. Behind the car stand a woman in a white hat and a man in a shirt full of bright colors. In the background a light facade with blue shutters and flowering shrubs.
Holidaymakers in France, August 1969: the caption says no more than that, no names and no place. Slim Aarons made the photograph. The upright format stacks the layers on top of each other: the open door in front, then the driver, the leaning man, the standing couple and finally the facade. Through that door you look into a conversation that is already under way. It feels like the moment just before departure, when nobody is in a hurry yet.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
