About this work
Princess Nina, 1958
A young woman stands in tall grass beside a flowing stream, a fishing rod with a landing net in her right hand, the left resting loosely at her belt. She wears a pink striped blouse, a dark skirt and a green hat with a pin. At her feet sits a white dog with long ears. Behind her stands a wooden hut, with wooded hills under a gray sky.
The caption dates the picture to September 1958 and names her as the model Nina Dyer, then married to Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan, ready to go fishing. What makes the picture striking is the clothing set against the place: a woman in a neat skirt and blouse, with a pendant and a large belt buckle, in the middle of the grass and wildflowers. She stands upright and looks into the camera, while the water behind her simply keeps flowing.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
