About this work
Guinness Family, Leixlip Castle 1963
A man in a purple and orange ikat jacket sits behind a blue and white striped sofa, his hand on the armrest. Next to him lean two blonde children in white lace clothes, one of them with a light blue sash. All three look gravely into the camera. Behind them runs a wall of leather-bound books on white shelves; on the right lies a stack of books about Georgian style.
Hon Desmond Guinness posed with his children Marina and Patrick at Leixlip Castle, County Kildare, Ireland, which he had recently acquired. Their mother was Princess Marie Gabrielle von Urach. The caption refers to Holiday Magazine, 1963. Slim Aarons sets three textures against each other: the busy ikat, the white lace and the sober stripe of the sofa. Between them are three calm, light gazes at one height, and the children are as composed as their father.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
