About this work
Skiing In Vail, Colorado 1964
Two skiers stand at the bottom of a broad white slope, beside a spruce heavy with snow. They are seen from behind, poles in hand. Further on, a trail of small figures climbs the mountain between scattered pines until it vanishes in the mist. A dark edge of forest rises on the left; the upper half of the image is almost entirely white.
Skiers pass by a snow-covered tree in Vail, Colorado, in 1964, according to the caption. Slim Aarons made the photograph in upright format. The depth comes from scale: two figures in front, a row of dots high on the slope, and nothing but snow in between. Because the mist wipes out the summit, the mountain seems to have no end. The big spruce on the right holds the image in place, a dark-white mass against all that light.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
