About this work

Count Guido Monzino, Lake Como 1983

In the middle of a mirror-smooth lake, a man stands upright in a grey rowing boat, wearing a pale yellow suit and tie, both hands on the oars that run over a metal arch. Behind him a wooded promontory rises with an ochre villa by the water. Farther off, mountains stand in the haze and a row of houses lines the shore.

The Italian mountaineer and explorer Count Guido Monzino rowed across Lake Como in June 1983 to his home, Villa del Balbianello near Lenno. In 1973 he had led the first Italian expedition to Mount Everest. The photograph puts him squarely before the lens, symmetrical between the two arcs of the boat, with the villa right beside his shoulder: the man and his destination in one line, joined by the dark water.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
