About this work
Mister Roberts, 1955
Beside the gray superstructure of a ship, a film crew works in the sun. In front sits a man in a pink-and-white-striped shirt beside a binder with a name. A bare-chested man in khaki trousers stands by a track of green planks; behind him a lamp hangs from a long arm. On the right a man in a khaki uniform and cap steps through a doorway.
The caption places the shot in 1955 on the set of Mister Roberts, directed by John Ford and Mervyn LeRoy. Henry Fonda, the star, comes up on deck as Lt Doug Roberts. Slim Aarons reversed the proportions: the star is one of the smallest figures in the frame, framed by a door on the right, while crew, track and equipment fill the rest. It is a photograph about making a scene, not about the scene itself.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
