About this work
Onassis In Office, August 1956
A man in a dark blue suit with a white pocket square and an open collar leans with one hand on a desk covered in papers and looks gravely into the camera. Behind him, in a heavy gilded frame, hangs a dark painting of a figure in a long robe. On the wooden wall beside it, two swords with golden hilts. On the desk, a framed portrait of a woman.
According to the caption, the Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis stood in the office aboard his yacht Christina in August 1956, next to a painting by El Greco and swords of solid gold. Slim Aarons made the photograph. The room is low and paneled, and the man fills the right half as the painting fills the left. So he stands among his possessions as one of the pieces, and his fixed gaze is the only thing in the room that is not decorative.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
