About this work
Porto Ercole Harbour, Tuscany 1967
From above, through the mast and rigging of a sailboat, you look down on a quay where cars stand close together: a small cream-colored car and three dark sedans. A woman in a yellow dress walks past barefoot, another in a red skirt steps between the cars, a bare-chested man carries a blue shirt over his arm. All around lie rowboats and a yellow rubber dinghy.
Boats and cars at the harbor of Porto Ercole, Tuscany, in August 1967, according to the caption. Slim Aarons made the photograph. The lines of the rigging run crisscross over the whole image, so that you view the quay as through a net. The upright format stacks water, quay and water: above and below lie the boats, in the middle the cars. The harbor is here a parking lot for both.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
