About this work
Snowmass Village, Colorado 1968
Two women stand in the snow beside a small helicopter with a bubble-shaped glass cabin and red seats. One wears a blue jacket with a white fur trim, blue trousers and a white headband; the other a bright green jacket, a green wide-brimmed hat and skis under her feet. Behind them stand spruces and snowy peaks under a deep blue sky.
The caption describes two women in the foreground of a snowy landscape with a helicopter, on the slopes of Snowmass Village in Pitkin County, Colorado, in March 1968. Slim Aarons made the photograph. The helicopter, with its open tail of tubes and its glass bubble, looks more like a large insect than a machine. The women pay it no attention, and the long shadows on the snow bind people and aircraft together all the same.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
