About this work
La Fontelina, Capri 1989
From high above you look down on a rocky shore where loungers, towels and parasols in blue and green stand packed together between gray boulders. Sunbathers lie on every flat spot. The water all around is dark blue and sparkles in the backlight, with white foam where the waves break. At right a small boat bobs; at the bottom you look over pine branches and a thatched roof.
In September 1989 Slim Aarons captured the sunbathers and parasols of La Fontelina in an aerial shot, at the foot of the Faraglioni on the island of Capri. The high vantage point turns the beach into a pattern: the round parasols become dots, the loungers dashes. Above lies the great, glittering water, and between that crowd and that emptiness the picture holds its balance.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
