About this work
Minnie And Dru Montagu, Casa de Campo 1977
On a white beach stands a wooden lounger with green cushions; a woman in a white bikini top and a wide hat lies on it, one leg drawn up. In front of the lounger a man sits cross-legged in the sand, in a light blue shirt, white trousers and a straw hat. Behind them stand palms and a wicker parasol; at right a sailboat floats in the shallows.
Minnie and Dru Montagu relaxed in April 1977 on the beach at Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic. Slim Aarons places the couple at left and leaves the right half to water and sail. That sailboat is more than scenery: the white triangular sail balances the couple and keeps the square composition in equilibrium. Read the picture from left to right and you go from rest to departure.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
