About this work

Pebble Beach Hunt, California 1976

In a courtyard of gray cobblestones, a hunting party waits in front of a white house with a red tile roof. Riders in red and black coats sit on chestnuts, grays and bays; among the horses' legs swarms a pack of white-and-brown hounds. Behind the house tall conifers stand against a pale sky, and under the porch more riders wait.

In November 1976 the riders gathered in the courtyard of Richard Collins's house for the stirrup cup, the drink before the start of the Pebble Beach Hunt of English and American foxhounds in California. The four red coats are whip Janet Ellis, joint master John Love, president of the US Pony Club, huntsman Patrick Ellis and joint master Richard Collins. Aarons spreads those four red spots across the width of the frame, so your eye jumps from rider to rider while the hounds fill the middle.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
