About this work
Saint-Tropez, August 1971
Along the quay stands a row of houses in salmon pink, ochre and pale yellow, with green and gray shutters, narrow balconies and a single red awning. In front of them lie motorboats with white and light-blue hulls. A bell tower with a yellow dome rises above the roofs; the sky is an even, deep blue and the water repeats everything in shimmering stripes.
The waterfront of Saint-Tropez, on the French Riviera, in August 1971. Little happens: no people in the foreground, no crowds, just the quay in full sunlight. Aarons looks straight at the facades from the water, without depth, so the houses stand side by side like a strip of colored blocks. That frontal view turns the harbor into a pattern, and the blue above and below frames the whole like a border.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
