About this work
Party At The Playboy Mansion, Chicago 1961
A blonde woman in a red ruffled dress leans over a drum kit, smiling; beside her a man in a dark suit laughs, a glass in his hand. Behind them guests in suits raise their glasses at a table with a fruit bowl and candles. On the wood-panelled wall hangs a large abstract painting in red and black, beneath a chandelier and bright lights.
Guests of publisher Hugh Hefner celebrated at the Playboy Mansion in Chicago in 1961, and Slim Aarons photographed them up close. What keeps the picture lively is the foreground: the cymbals of the drum kit cut into the frame at the bottom and a drumstick pokes in from the corner. So you are not standing next to the party but in the middle of the music, in the drummer's seat.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
