About this work
Plantation Cocoyer, February 1981
Five people lie and float in a swimming pool that runs right up to the bar under a thatched roof. In the foreground a woman in a bikini leans back on a sunken step with a glass in her hand; a man swims past on his stomach. Beyond the edge of the pool, with red cloths and flower pots, lies a turquoise sea under a high blue sky.
In February 1981 Slim Aarons captured how guests relaxed in the bar of Plantation Cocoyer, on Cocoyer Beach in Haiti. The vertical format stacks three layers on top of each other: the bar and the swimmers, the edge of the pool with its cloths and plants, and then the sea. The water in the pool and the water beyond are almost the same colour, so the boundary between hotel and ocean blurs.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
