About this work
Palm Beach Ladies, 1964
Seen from above, two barefoot women stand in the shallow water of a tiled swimming pool. On the left a blonde woman in a pale yellow dress with a mint-green headscarf, sunglasses held loosely in her hand; on the right a dark-haired woman in a yellow dress with large pink flowers and a pink headscarf. Both look straight up, into the camera.
The caption names the woman on the right: the American socialite Wendy Vanderbilt. Together with another woman she wore Lilly Pulitzer sun dresses in Palm Beach, Florida, in 1964. From this steep angle the shadows disappear and the blue of the tiles becomes a flat field on which the two prints lie side by side, the pale one and the exuberant one. The upturned faces make it an encounter rather than a fashion plate.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
