About this work
Capri Cruise, Aeolian Islands 1954
On the deck of a ship a woman with short dark hair in a light blue shirt lies on a gray cushion, her head on her hand and her other hand on a straw hat with a wavy brim. She looks into the camera. On the right a young man sits against the railing, absorbed in a book. Further along someone sunbathes on a green cushion among ropes and rigging.
According to the caption, Princess Laudomia Hercolani and Prince Andrea Hercolani relaxed on deck in 1954 during a cruise around the Aeolian Islands. The image itself shows a woman and a man each looking a different way: she at the photographer, he at his page. Those two lines of sight lend the cramped space of the deck a quiet tension, and the figure at the back, flat out in the sun, completes the scene.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
