About this work
Hepburn And Friends, San Francisco 1953
Three women stand close together, glasses in hand, laughing. On the left a dark-haired young woman in a black dress and white gloves, her glass at her lips; in the middle a woman in a white suit with a large pendant; on the right a blonde woman in a black halter dress with a fur stole over her arm. Behind them hangs a large painted panel.
According to the caption, the woman on the left is the film star Audrey Hepburn, talking with Mrs Grover Magnin in the middle and another guest at a party in San Francisco. Slim Aarons made the photograph in 1953 and lined the three faces up against the dark backdrop. The other two women both look to the left, so that every gaze ends at Hepburn, the only one drinking while the others talk and laugh.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
