About this work

Connelly And Guest, Palm Beach circa 1955

Two blonde women sit side by side on the white edge of a swimming pool and look straight into the lens. On the left a woman in a high-waisted white bikini, on the right a woman in a pink blouse with a pearl necklace and pearl earrings. Both wear red lipstick. Behind them lies the blue water, with steps and patio chairs on the far side.

According to the caption, the American socialite Cee Zee Guest sits on the left, next to Joanne Connelly, in Palm Beach, Florida, around 1955. Slim Aarons moved in close and let the pool fall out of focus. What makes the picture compelling is the difference between the two: the same blonde curls, the same red mouth, but one in swimwear and relaxed, the other in pink and pearls and considerably sterner.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
