About this work
Bond Girl To Be, Rome 1955
A young woman with short, fair hair lies in a white hammock, her head on a yellow cushion and one arm behind her head. She wears a white top and looks straight into the camera, without a smile. Behind her stands a large bunch of gladioli in pink, red and white; on the right a bowl of fruit sits on a stone pedestal.
The caption names the Swiss actress Ursula Andress, taking a siesta in a hammock during a visit to Rome in 1955. Slim Aarons photographed her from close by and from the side. The quiet reclining and the wide-awake, direct gaze contradict each other, and that is what the picture turns on: this is not a sleeping woman but someone who has noticed the photographer. The flowers behind make the frame full and warm.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
