About this work
Dolores Del Rio, Acapulco 1952
From above you see a woman floating on her back in blue-green water, one arm stretched wide. A red flower sits in her dark hair, which fans out around her head. She wears a strapless top with a light print, pearl earrings and red lipstick, and looks calmly into the camera. At the bottom left the edge of the pool enters the frame.
The caption names the Mexican film star Dolores Del Rio, floating in a swimming pool in Acapulco in 1952. Slim Aarons photographed her straight from above, so that the water fills the whole frame and there is no horizon left. There is nothing around her but color. The red of the flower and the lips is the only warm tone in all that green and keeps the eye on her face.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
