About this work

Mario Soldati, Rome circa 1982

An older man in a brown suit and tie stands on a path covered in fallen leaves, legs crossed, leaning on a long bamboo cane. His hair and moustache are white. To the left a marble bust stands on a column; farther down the path more busts follow under tall trees. The light falls softly through the canopy.

The caption names the author and film director Mario Soldati, around 1982 in the Borghese Gardens in Rome. Slim Aarons placed him in the middle of the avenue, at eye level, with the row of busts for company. The man of flesh and blood and the man of marble stand on the same line; he adopts the same calm bearing as the statues around him, yet the brown of his suit sets him apart.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
