About this work
Lounging In Bermuda, 1969
A woman in a bikini and a wrap skirt with large flowers sits on a white wrought-iron bench at the edge of a swimming pool, legs crossed, a glass in her hand. An orange scarf is tied around her hair. Beside her stand two small chairs with red cushions, behind her a wall covered in ivy. A few loose flowers float on the water.
The caption names Jill Council, who relaxed with a drink by a swimming pool in Bermuda in November 1969. Slim Aarons kept his distance and built the picture in horizontal bands: water, edge, furniture, hedge, lawn. In the middle of that strict order she is the only one sitting at an angle. The floating flowers on the left repeat the colors of her skirt and draw the eye from the water to her.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
