About this work
Palm Beach Palace, 1985
From the air you look down on a large white house with arched windows, a roof terrace and a swimming pool on a raised patio. On the roof lie dark panels and a glass dome. Around the house are lawns, palms and a second, elongated pool; on the left a road runs along the water. Far back you can see the sand bunkers of a golf course among the trees.
The caption describes the house of the builder Robert Gottfried on Lake Worth in Palm Beach, Florida, in 1985. It was designed by John Gosman and had solar panels, an underground garage and a two-story greenhouse. Slim Aarons photographed it from above, so that precisely those technical details become visible: the panels on the roof, the glass greenhouse at the side. A villa in classical style, with the future on its roof.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
