About this work

Look No Shoes !, 1964

A woman in a short dress with a yellow floral print crosses a wet street barefoot. She is laughing, a white scarf over her hair. Behind her stands an old black car with a white top and a spare wheel, parked in front of shops with awnings. In the foreground, out of focus, the chrome grille of a dark car gleams in the gray light.

The caption names Mrs A Atwater Kent Jnr, who in 1964 crossed the street barefoot in the rain, in a simple dress; the picture appeared in A Wonderful Time. Slim Aarons chose a viewpoint behind a parked car, which fills the lower part of the frame. As a result she walks straight toward the viewer, between two cars, and the wet street becomes a narrow gangplank.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
