About this work

Crespi Family Members, Porto Ercole 1986

Four people pose close together by a white fence, with a green lawn and a row of flags in the distance. On the left a man in a red-and-blue patterned shirt, next to him a girl in white holding a ball. Then a boy in a pink shirt and jeans, and a blonde woman in white. Sunglasses and a small black case poke into the frame.

The caption names Brando Crespi with his daughter Chloe, and his sister Pilar Crespi Echavarria with her son Sebastian, at the Monte Argentario Polo Club in Porto Ercole in September 1986. It is a family portrait without a strict arrangement: arms over shoulders, the woman looking aside while the man and the girl look into the lens. The field behind stays soft, so all the attention remains with the four.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
