About this work
Tuscan Holiday, Porto Ercole 1969
From steeply above you look down on a rocky coast with pink and blue parasols, folding chairs and towels on the stones. A wooden jetty with a small ladder reaches into the water; on either side lie a red and white motorboat and a grey inflatable. The water is so clear that the stones on the bottom show. At the top right someone swims in the blue-green.
Holidaymakers on the Tuscan coast, at the Hotel Il Pellicano in Porto Ercole, in August 1969. Because the camera looks almost straight down, the horizon vanishes and the coast becomes a ground plan: parasols as round dots, the jetty as a slanting stroke, the boats as loose shapes in the water. The upright format lets the sea fill the upper half, so the people on the rocks stay small.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
