About this work
Swimming Pool On The Beach, Turks and Caicos Islands 1981
In the middle of the pool a man stands waist-deep in the water, while another sits on the edge with his legs in it. On the terrace behind them people walk back and forth; at right someone stands in a yellow shirt. Farther off a small group strolls across the white sand toward the sea, where a sailboat lies. Above it all hangs a large white cloud.
Slim Aarons also made this shot in March 1981 at the pool of Ginny and Bill Cowles's Meridian Club on the Turks and Caicos Islands. Here the sky is a deeper blue, the framing wider, and the emphasis lies on the traffic between pool and sea. No one is swimming; everyone stands, walks or sits. The picture catches the back and forth between one blue and the other.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
