About this work
Celebrity Cruise, Costa Smeralda 1967
On the deck of a boat stands a bare-chested man in glasses and white swimming trunks, looking away past the camera. Around him sit women in large white sunglasses, a yellow hat and a pink headscarf; on the right a man in a white mesh shirt slides out of the frame. Behind them lie blue water and a bare, rocky coast.
In August 1967 the British comedian Peter Sellers was on holiday with Princess Margaret aboard the Aga Khan's yacht off the Costa Smeralda. Nobody poses here. The camera stands in the middle of a crowded deck, among knees, shoulders and sunglasses, as if the photographer were looking for a spot too. That makes the picture feel like a holiday snapshot from the inside, while Sellers stands upright in the middle of the frame, looking out to sea over everyone else.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
