About this work
Here Is The News, 1965
A young man in a grey-brown jacket sits upright at a desk and looks straight into the lens. His tie is striped diagonally in red and beige, a red pocket square sticks out of his breast pocket, and a small microphone is clipped to the tie. Between his fingers he holds a yellow pencil above a folder of papers. Behind him everything is dark.
The caption names him as newsreader Peter Jennings and dates the photograph to 1965. ABC had hired him in 1964, and at 26 he became the youngest anchor of a national television network. The picture works through its restraint: no studio set, no cameras, only the man, the pencil and that gaze. You see what was asked of a news anchor before he has spoken a single word.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
