About this work
In A Jeep, circa 1957
A man in a polo shirt, shorts and a straw hat with a dark band sits behind the wheel of a green open jeep on a sand track. The tyres are coarse, the paint is dull. Behind him the slope drops away to a bay with turquoise water, a sandy beach, white sailboats and a headland with low buildings. Trees frame the view on both sides.
According to the caption this is Laurance Rockefeller, around 1957; it does not say where he was driving. The jeep sits across the frame and fills the lower half, while the bay takes up the upper half: the dusty, angular vehicle below, the soft blue above. The man looks calmly into the lens, one hand on the wheel, as if he had just stopped for the view and not for the photograph.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
