Castel Bonifacio, Corsica 1984
From a great height you look into a narrow, deep harbor winding between steep white rocks toward the sea. Rows of sailing boats and motor yachts lie along the quays, and a speedboat draws a white wake through the dark water. At the top the fortress sits on the rock, with the old town pressed close against it, and beyond that only the open sea.
In August 1984 Slim Aarons photographed the marina of Bonifacio on Corsica, with the castle that, according to the caption, towers over it. The upright format does a lot here. The picture reads from bottom to top: from the jetties close to the camera, along the long inlet, to the fortress and the sea. The harbor becomes a road your eye travels, with the castle as its destination.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
