About this work
Kirk Douglas In Antibes, 1969
Kirk Douglas sits shirtless on the edge of the quay in checked swim trunks, one foot already in the binding of a water ski. He looks laughing over his shoulder at the camera. Beside him lies a glossy red motorboat with Eleven-Eleven on the transom and a Canadian flag; on the afterdeck sits a young man in white trousers.
The American actor Kirk Douglas, on the right, was getting ready to go waterskiing at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes in August 1969. Aarons captures the moment just before the start, when everything is still quiet. The ski, the rope and the boat's transom draw the eye to the left, but Douglas turns around and pulls it back with his laugh.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
