About this work

You Look Wonderful, Georgia 1990

On a wooden balcony with crossed balusters stand a man and a woman, both in mirrored sunglasses. He grins broadly, holds a ski upright and puts an arm around her. She spreads her arms across the railing, in a ski suit with pink stripes, green panels and a wide belt, a black cap with a badge on her head and light fur boots on her feet.

Alpine ski champion Max Rieger stood on the balcony of a villa in Gudari, in the Caucasus mountains in Georgia, in 1990. Beside him stood Meg O'Neil, in a ski suit by Bogner with an Aeroflot cap and mirrored sunglasses. The picture works through excess: every color and every accessory demands attention, and the strict brown lines of the balcony hold it all together like a frame. His grin makes clear that this is play.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
