About this work

Harbour Isle Beach, March 1973

Five young people walk side by side across the white beach toward the camera, in swim trunks and bikinis, two of them carrying a bag. Two brown dogs sniff along the seaweed. On the left stand two small tents with yellow and blue checks. Above them a dark blue sky takes up well over two thirds of the frame, with a few thin smears of cloud.

Holidaymakers on the beach at Harbour Isle in the Bahamas, in March 1973. Here they come toward you. The group walks side by side, as if on a runway of sand, and that gives the picture direction and movement. The sky above is as large as in an empty picture, but now it feels different: it is the space the group seems to step out of.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
