About this work
Apres Ski, Gstaad 1977
A woman in a coral-red blouse and cream trousers lies stretched out on a wooden bench piled with floral cushions, a cigarette between her fingers. Around her, pots of pink, red and yellow flowers stand on the balcony railing. Behind a tall pine, snow-covered peaks rise in hazy light; at bottom right lies a stack of books.
Mrs Alfredo Cernadas posed on a balcony in Gstaad, Switzerland, in 1977 for Slim Aarons. The title speaks of après-ski, but there is no skiing to be seen: only the mountains give away the season. What gives the picture its tension is the contrast between inside and outside. The bench, the cushions and the flower pots make a warm living room in the open air, while the cool, white landscape lies beyond.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
