About this work
Home Waters, Lake Como 1983
On the white foredeck of a motor launch a man and a woman sit facing each other, talking. He wears a blue sweater and brown trousers and has curly hair and a beard; she sits in red and pink, sunglasses on, one hand raised in mid-sentence. Behind them lies dark water, and beyond it a yellow villa with dark shutters against a wooded slope.
In June 1983 Slim Aarons photographed fashion designer Gianni Versace and Lalla Spagnol on a motor launch in front of his seventeenth-century villa on Lake Como. The bow points straight at the house, and the two sit exactly on the line between camera and facade. That lets the picture play two things against each other: the villa stands stern and symmetrical in the background, while the conversation on the deck in front of it is skewed, loose and unfinished.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
