About this work
Conca dei Marini, August 1984
You look straight down into a bay where the water shades from deep blue to clear green. White motorboats lie scattered at anchor and a row of buoys draws a dotted line across the water. At the bottom lies a narrow pebble beach crowded with rowing boats and sunbathers, with a low building at its edge. In the upper right a breakwater of concrete blocks juts out into the sea.
Slim Aarons photographed the busy bay of Conca dei Marini, on the Amalfi coast in Italy, in August 1984. In this vertical crop the height does the work: the water takes up almost the whole frame and the beach is a narrow strip at the bottom. The higher you look in the picture, the darker the sea and the sparser the boats, so that the crowd gathers at the bottom by the shore like sediment in a glass.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
