About this work

On The Slopes Of Sugarbush, Vermont circa 1960

Beneath a sloping wooden roof with red beams, a group of young people is scattered across a tall living room. Sheepskins and playing cards lie on the floor, and on the sofas people talk and read. A head with large antlers hangs by the stone fireplace on the left, a second head on the wooden wall. Through the red window wall comes the white light of a snowy landscape.

According to the caption, this group was relaxing around 1960 at the chalet of stockbroker A Albert Sack Jr, near the Sugarbush Mountain ski area in Warren, Vermont. The slopes are nowhere in sight; the snow stays outside the glass. Aarons shoots from high and at an angle, so the floor takes the lead and card players, readers and talkers form one continuous scene.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
