About this work
J. Gordon Douglas, Santa Barbara circa 1970
From high up you look across a symmetrical garden with clipped hedges, boxwood figures and a gravel path to a stone gate. In the middle of the steps stand a woman in pink and white and a man in a dark jacket with a walking stick. Below, a dog lies on the driveway, and on the right stands a black sports car. Mist hangs over the hills behind the trees.
Mr. and Mrs. J. Gordon Douglas stood in the formal gardens of their home in Santa Barbara, California, around 1970. The couple takes up only a small part of the picture. The high camera position turns the garden into a floor plan, with the axis of path and steps as its spine, and they stand precisely on that line. The black car and the dog at the bottom are the only things outside the geometry.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
