About this work
Porto Ercole, Il Pellicano 1973
A small sailboat lies some way off the jetty, with two people on board and an oar in the water. On the jetty stand two men in swim trunks, and a woman in a pink hat sits beside an orange towel. A rope runs at an angle from the jetty to a buoy in deeper water. On the rocks below stand red-and-blue umbrellas with lounge chairs.
A jetty on the rocky shoreline at Hotel Il Pellicano in Porto Ercole, Tuscany, August 1973. In this crop the water gets most of the space: the upper half is almost empty, deep green sea with only the rope to the buoy as a diagonal line. That makes the distance between jetty and boat the real subject, as if the picture falls exactly between departure and arrival.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
