About this work
Villa At Cuarton, Costa de la Luz 1970
A white house with battlements, round porthole and pointed-arch windows encloses a swimming pool beneath a deep blue sky. A man in a light blue shirt and white trousers stands on the edge, pulling a woman in a straw hat by the hand through the water; a third floats outstretched behind her. On the terrace stand a statue and a woman, and on the steps sits a man in red.
In September 1970 Slim Aarons photographed bathers at the pool of Vanessa Somers McConnell in Cuarton, on the Costa de la Luz in Spain. He let the white architecture fill almost the entire frame, with the water as a narrow turquoise strip along the bottom. Against those austere, bright walls the small chain of people in the pool stands out all the more: one man on dry land who seems to be pulling two others through the water.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
