About this work
Von Bismarcks, Marbella 1990
Two young women stand back to back, close to the camera. On the left a blonde with long, sun-bleached hair turns her head over her shoulder and looks into the lens with a small smile. On the right a brunette with bangs laughs broadly, sunglasses on her head and a gold earring in her ear. Behind them the garden blurs into patches of green.
Slim Aarons photographed Barbara and Debonnaire von Bismarck in Marbella in 1990. The caption does not say who is on the left and who on the right. Aarons got close here and let the surroundings fall away into blur, leaving little more than two faces. The contrast does the rest: one reserved over the shoulder, the other openly laughing, light and dark hair set against each other.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
