About this work
C Z And Friends, Palm Beach circa 1955
Beneath tall coconut palms a woman in a white shirt and white shorts stands beside a green vintage car with a fabric top and the letters C and Z on its side. On her arm she holds a small white poodle, and beside her stands a Great Dane with its mouth open. Sunlight falls in patches on the sandy path; the rest stays in the shade of the leaves.
Around 1955 Slim Aarons photographed the American socialite C. Z. Guest, Mrs. Winston F. C. Guest, in Palm Beach, Florida, with her Ford Model T with its own lettering, in the company of a poodle and a Great Dane. The palms take up more than two thirds of the frame. As a result woman, car and dogs stand small at the bottom, like a group portrait that the garden almost swallows up.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
