About this work
Portofino, circa 1955
Through olive branches you look down from the slope on a harbor full of yachts. Sailing boats with tall masts and motorboats with white sun awnings lie close together, behind them a row of pastel-colored houses along the quay. Above that a wooded hill climbs with villas and a church tower, and a large white cloud slides over the top.
Around 1955 Slim Aarons photographed the yachts moored in the Italian fishing village of Portofino. He chose a spot high on the slope and left the olive trees standing at the edges. That green in the foreground works like a peephole: it turns the harbor into a scene you discover, rather than a postcard. The boats and houses fill the middle almost to the edge.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
