About this work
Kennedy And Friends, Jamaica 1953
In front of a propeller plane of Pan American World Airways, two women walk laughing across the apron, with bags, a fur stole and a small case in their hands. A few steps behind them follows a young man in a suit, a coat over his arm. Crew members in white uniforms stand by the boarding steps. Above everything hangs a large cumulus cloud, in black and white.
In 1953 Slim Aarons photographed Senator John F. Kennedy with Shirley Rogan Ellis and Betty LoSavio at Montego Bay Airport in Jamaica. What stands out is the division of roles in the picture: the two women walk in front and catch the light, the senator comes last, beneath the wing. It becomes a travel photograph in which the man named in the title is almost a bystander.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
