About this work

Fishing Boats, Mexico 1952

Two large fishing nets hang like sails between wooden poles, with floats along the edges. Through the fine mesh you see a three-master on a calm bay and mountains in the haze. On the left a few men, in silhouette, drag a boat across the sand. At the bottom, light blue rowboats lie on the beach.

Fishing nets and boats on the shore in Mexico, in 1952. In this shot Slim Aarons photographed through the nets, against the light. The mesh lays a soft layer over everything behind it, the bay, the ship and the working men. In this way the fishermen's gear is both the subject and the filter through which you look.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
