About this work
Bermuda Idyll, 1977
A round swimming pool lies on a terrace with a white balustrade, just above deep blue water. Straw parasols and loungers with yellow floral cushions surround it; a woman in a sun hat floats on an inner tube. A man in swimming trunks and a man in a hat stand at the edge, a woman sits on the tiles. Two sailboats at anchor, white houses on a hill opposite.
In 1977 Slim Aarons photographed Mrs Frank McMahon and her guests around the pool at her seaside home in Bermuda. He took the picture from higher up the slope, so that the turquoise of the pool lies directly against the dark blue of the sea. Those two blues, separated by no more than a balustrade, make the photograph: the small, measured water of the house next to the big water behind it.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
