About this work
Henley Regatta, Henley-on-Thames 1955
Wooden launches and punts lie side by side along the quay in front of a white hotel with flags along the windows. In the foreground a man stands at the back of a punt with a long pole while his passengers sit. On the quay people crowd around a sign saying Free Moorings. Clouds hang over the red roofs, and at right a stone parapet carries a lantern.
In 1955 Slim Aarons photographed the free mooring at the Angel Hotel in Henley-on-Thames, on the River Thames, during the Henley Regatta. Nothing of the rowing races themselves can be seen. Aarons chose a higher vantage point and focused on the bank: boats tying up, waiting, sitting on the terrace. The regatta appears here as a crowd along the water's edge.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
