About this work
Private Transport, Palm Beach 1954
A blonde woman in a blouse with a small pattern leans over the seat of an open car, searching in a checked bag. The steering wheel and dashboard fill the bottom corner. Right behind the car stands a high-wing plane of the Everglades Flying Service, with a man in uniform and cap busy at the cabin door. Everything is in black and white, with wind in her hair.
Gladys 'Patsy' Bartlett, née Pulitzer, was rummaging in her bag on the seat of an open car in 1954, parked by a plane of the Everglades Flying Service in Palm Beach, Florida. Slim Aarons made a picture of layered means of transport from it: the car in front, the plane behind, the woman in between. The ordinary action, looking for something in a bag, gives that setting of luxury something everyday.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
